Ingredients
Doughnuts
1 box white cake mix*
1 1/3 cup milk
3 egg whites (save the yolks for your omelet tomorrow)
2 tablespoons canola oil
Red food dye
Blue food dye
Yellow food dye
Glaze (Optional)
1 1/2 cups powdered sugar
2 tablespoons milk
Preparation
Preheat the oven to 350 degrees.
Mix cake mix, milk, egg whites, and oil on medium speed with a hand mixer for about two minutes. Diving the mixture evenly between six small bowls, using about 3/4 cup of batter per bowl.
Make six colors using the following dye combinations:
Red: 15 drops red
Blue: 14 drops blue
Yellow: 8 drops yellow
Green: 9 drops yellow, 2 drops blue
Orange: 5 drops yellow, 2 drops red
Purple: 7 drops red, 2 drops blue
Mix individual colors well.
Grease a doughnut pan, then scoop and layer batter in desired pattern. Fill circles about 2/3 full.
Bake 12-15, checking for doneness after 12. Let cool for five minutes in the pan, then remove to a plate and drizzle with glaze (optional).
To make the glaze, combine powdered sugar and milk in a small bowl. Mix until smooth, about two minutes with a hand mixer, then drizzle over the doughnut.
Design Ideas:
Drop dollops of batter around the bottom of the circle in a uniform pattern.
Layer the colors by adding a single tablespoon of batter of each color.
Create a tie-dye look by swirling the colors with a toothpick.
*If you prefer, make the white box mix according to package directions, then add coloring. However, we suggest omitting yolks (for extra fluffiness and a whiter base) and swapping water for milk for any boxed white cake mix.
