Bitter gourd, is a tropical and subtropical vine of the family Cucurbitaceae. It is also known as bitter squash, bitter melon, and balsam-pear, and it grows widely in Africa, Asia, and the Caribbean for its fruit. While it is extremely bitter, among other fruits from kingdom Plantae, bitter gourd has a number of health benefits.

Bitter gourd is widely recognized for its medicinal effects, such as lowering the blood glucose in diabetes mellitus. As per the publication, two spoonfuls of bitter gourd juice can be taken daily to help cleanse the liver and get rid of jaundice or yellowish discoloration of the skin and the white part if the eyes. Two ounces of bitter gourd juice can also be mixed with lime juice and the mixture is sipped slowly on an empty stomach everyday for four to six months.

The heart also gains benefit from bitter gourd.
