Taking Your Coffee Black May Be a Sign You’re a Psychopath – Study

Some people have a weakness for salty and sweet foods, while others love anything spicy and sour. But there are also fans of bitter food and drinks.

These people usually don’t even think about choosing anything over dark chocolate and would never even dream of adding a creamer or milk to their black coffee. If this sounds familiar to you, you could be the target of this new research, which says that people who prefer their coffee black have psychopathic tendencies.
Your Taste Preferences May Show Your Personality

If you’re someone who loves double espresso and you skip sugar or you can finish or at least consume about 85% of an Ecuadorian chocolate, this may be what the study is trying to tell you.

According to the research performed at the University of Innsbruck, Austria, your favorite flavors may have something to do with your own personality. The study had more than 950 American adults who were around the age of 35. They all completed a personality test that assessed levels of the following:

    Aggression
    Narcissism
    Psychopathy
    Sadism
    Machiavellianism
    Extraversion
    Conscientiousness
    Openness
    Agreeability
    Neuroticism

In the exam, they were asked their taste preferences, which can be anything from salty, sweet, sour, and bitter. The study later revealed that those who chose bitter food and drinks were associated with personality traits that can be viewed as malevolent. These bitter items include:

    Celery
    Beer
    Radishes
    Tonic water
    Coffee

Those who scored most on psychopathy and sadism are those who love drinking black coffee and everything that tastes bitter. Additionally, the researchers concluded that the preference for bitter foods is a much better assessment for personality than other taste preferences. According to the researchers, there is indeed a connection between the darkness of the personality and the food and drink preference.

On the other hand, those who had a high score on being agreeable mostly hated bitter foods and were more inclined to consuming sweet food and drinks.

So does this mean it’s time to start screening potential psychopaths through their Starbucks orders?

The answer to this is no, not exactly. Just like other personality studies, the truth is more complicated than the results. When taken together, the taste preference does not truly reveal any crucial correlation with the personality trait of an individual, which can be viewed as antisocial. In other words, even though personality and taste are tied to each other, your preference for a single particular food – in this case, black coffee – does not really reveal much.
